When God Shakes a Nation
When I saw the news about the New York City election, my heart sank. Not because of politics, but because it feels like a mirror of what’s happening to our whole country. America has lost its way.
Somewhere along the way we traded truth for comfort and conviction for acceptance. We stopped standing on what’s right and started doing what feels right. And honestly, it reminds me so much of Israel before God handed them over to King Nebuchadnezzar. They turned away, chasing idols and their own desires just like we’re doing now. And God, in His mercy, allowed a king who didn’t even know Him to rise up and wake them up.
Sometimes God allows certain leaders to rise up, not to punish us, but to get our attention.
I love this country. I really do. I love the freedom, the opportunity, the beauty, the way communities come together when tragedy strikes. But let’s be honest, spiritually we’ve drifted far away from the God who blessed this nation in the first place.
We’ve normalized sin. We’ve glorified pride. We’ve pushed God out of our schools, our families, and our government. We fight for the right to end life while mocking the very One who gives it. We cheer for things that break His heart and call anyone who disagrees hateful.
This is no longer about politics. It’s about a nation that has forgotten who its true King is.
It’s painful to say, but it’s true. We live in a country where evil is not just accepted, it’s celebrated. Abortion is called healthcare. Lust is called love. Greed is called success. And sin is called freedom.
It’s the same kind of darkness that filled Sodom and Gomorrah, where people no longer cared about righteousness, only about doing whatever felt right in their own eyes. And just like then, God is patient, but He’s also just. He won’t let a nation that was once dedicated to Him continue to spit in His face forever.
The Bible shows over and over again that when people repeatedly turn their backs on Him, God doesn’t always destroy them instantly. Sometimes He simply steps back and lets them live in the consequences of their choices.
That’s what happened with Israel. He let Nebuchadnezzar rule over them so they’d see how far they’d fallen. But even then, He didn’t abandon them. He was still there, calling them to repentance, protecting the faithful like Daniel, and preparing to restore them when they turned their hearts back to Him.
I believe that’s where America is right now. We’re being allowed to see what happens when we choose everything but God.
Daniel 2:21 says, “He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.” This verse is a reminder that nothing is out of God’s control. He still decides who rises to power. He still determines how long they stay there. And He still has the final say in every nation on earth, including ours.
So no matter who’s in office, who’s passing laws, or who’s trying to silence truth, God still reigns. His throne isn’t up for election. Maybe this shaking is what we needed. Maybe this is how hearts turn back. Maybe this is how revival begins, not through comfort but through conviction.
Because when everything we’ve built without God starts to crumble, that’s when people finally start to look up.
This isn’t the time to point fingers or argue sides. It’s the time to fall on our knees and pray. For mercy. For forgiveness. For our leaders. For our children. For God to have compassion on a nation that’s forgotten Him.
The same God who judged Sodom and humbled Nebuchadnezzar is also the God who restored Israel when they repented. He’s merciful. He’s patient. And He’s not done with America yet.
“If My people, who are called by My name, humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
We may not know what the next few years will look like, but I know this. God is still working. He’s still calling His people to stand firm, speak truth, and live set apart.
So yes, things look dark. But maybe that’s exactly what it takes for the light to be seen again.
Kings will rise and fall. Nations will too. But God? He never moves from His throne.
Father, we come before You with heavy hearts for this nation. We’ve turned away from You in so many ways, chasing comfort, pride, and our own desires. Yet You are still merciful. You still call us back. Lord, we ask for Your forgiveness. Heal our land. Soften the hearts of those who have grown distant from You. Open blind eyes, restore families, and awaken this generation to Your truth. We pray over every leader in America. Give them wisdom, conviction, and the courage to lead with integrity. And where hearts are hardened, we ask that You bring conviction that only Your Spirit can give. Bring revival, Lord, not just in churches, but in homes, schools, and workplaces. Let Your name be honored again in this nation. Use even the chaos, the pain, and the confusion to draw people back to You. We trust You, God. You are still on the throne, and nothing is outside of Your control.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
